Gynecomastia that has been present since the teenage years can be corrected at any adult age. Glandular tissue that is still there in adulthood usually stays, and over time the skin can stretch and sag. Surgery removes both the tissue and the excess skin. This 38-year-old from Riverside County waited more than 20 years.
He first noticed the problem around age 14 and spent the next two decades avoiding taking his shirt off at the beach or the pool. By the time he came in, his chest had progressed to Type 5 gynecomastia: sagging breast tissue, nipples sitting well below the chest muscle, and extra skin reaching toward the armpit. The longer gynecomastia goes untreated, the more the skin stretches, which is why later cases often need more than tissue removal alone.
Dr. Cruise, creator of the Cruise Gynecomastia Classification system, removed the glandular tissue and the excess skin. He then used free nipple grafts, where the nipples are taken off and placed back in a higher, more natural position on the flattened chest. The photos were taken 6 months after surgery.
“I started to realize I had a problem around the age of 14. I remember my younger female relatives making fun of me because I had boobs. It was very hurtful. I stopped taking my shirt off at the beach or the pool, because I was so embarrassed. I felt really bad and became very self-conscious. Suffering with Gynecomastia definitely affected my quality of life. Since having Gynecomastia surgery, my life has gotten so much better. I’m more confident and happier than ever before. I was at a resort in Florida recently and was finally able to go in the pool without my shirt on in front of my friends. The surgery has been life changing. It’s unbelievable. I wish I would have done this 15-20 years ago.”
