How Gynecomastia Surgery Can Boost Your Confidence

Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of male breast tissue, can cause self-consciousness in men of all ages. This condition can occur during infancy, puberty, or in middle-aged to older men, though it is most common during puberty. Men with gynecomastia have excessive amounts of glandular breast tissue, which can cause them to develop visible “man boobs”.

There are different types of gynecomastia, which can be distinguished by different characteristics. One of the most common types of gynecomastia is Puffy Nipple, which is caused by an excess amount of breast tissue under the nipple. Classic gynecomastia is when both excess breast tissue and fatty tissue are contributing to enlarged breasts. Fatty gynecomastia occurs when there is primarily fatty tissue present. Saggy gynecomastia occurs when there is also a n excess skin component causing the areola and nipple to sag; this most commonly occurs when a patient undergoes significant weight loss or through the natural aging process.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be caused by a number of factors, one being an imbalance in testosterone and estrogen levels. Males with higher levels of estrogen are at a higher risk of developing breast tissue. Also, men often lose testosterone as they age, so older men are at a higher risk of developing gynecomastia as well.

Other causes of man boobs include steroid use, alcohol abuse, hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease, radiation treatment, Klinefelter’s syndrome, and certain medications.

What Can Be Done to Treat Gynecomastia?

The only proven way to get rid of Gynecomastia is with Gynecomastia surgery. For those whose breasts are mainly made up of glandular tissue, the excision technique can be used to create a flatter chest appearance. For those with excess fatty tissue in the breasts, liposuction can be used to correct the issue. In some cases, both excision and liposuction will be used to provide an optimal result.  Additional skin tightening is used when there is skin laxity of the breasts.

Gynecomastia surgery can not only help to create a more masculine chest contour, it can also greatly boost men’s self-confidence, which can improve their overall sense of well-being.
