What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that causes excessive sweating. In fact, the name actually means too much (hyper) sweating (hidrosis). While sweat is necessary to cool the body, preventing us from overheating, those with hyperhidrosis sweat even when the body does not need cooling.

Many individuals who have hyperhidrosis sweat from a couple areas of the body. These often include the palms, feet, underarms, or head. This excessive sweating can interfere with everyday activities, and can cause self-consciousness as well.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

While certain systemic diseases can sometimes be the cause of hyperhidrosis, most individuals with the condition are otherwise healthy. In some cases, the condition may be caused by hyperthyroidism, low blood sugar, or excessive caffeine intake. However, the best way to determine your cause for sweating is through a consultation with a board certified physician or plastic surgeon.

How to Treat It
