Look Years Younger

Male Facelift at Cruise Plastic Surgery

The facelift has been performed by plastic surgeons for decades, but in the past ten years or so, plastic surgeons have begun taking a more advanced approach to facial rejuvenation.

For this reason, more men than ever are pursuing cosmetic surgery. With the help of Dr. Cruise, you can enjoy a younger, more rejuvenated face while still maintaining your natural appearance. Previously, the facelift focused on tightening the face's skin by pulling it back. This was because there was little understanding of the way that aging works, and there are many famous examples of the telltale “windswept” look. Today, the facelift approach focuses on lifting the skin in a more upward, somewhat vertical manner to avoid the windswept appearance while also addressing the loose tissues underneath the skin that also begin to sag with age. This technique achieves a more natural-looking result preferred by most patients.

Male Facelift Overview

A male facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the visible signs of aging in the lower face and neck.

When performing facelifts for his male patients, Dr. Cruise draws on an in-depth understanding of male facial anatomy to address the unique features and aesthetic goals of men. The result is a natural-looking, refreshed appearance that looks like you—just more youthful. Dr. Cruise offers a range of facelift techniques, which may include addressing the midface, jowls, and neck. He specializes in minimally invasive facelift surgery, allowing for a quicker recovery for many patients. The overall purpose of a male facelift is to tighten underlying muscles, reposition fat, and redrape the skin to create a smoother, firmer, and more youthful contour without feminizing the features or creating an artificial look. The goal is always natural-looking rejuvenation that enhances your existing masculine facial structure.

Combining Facial Procedures

For some patients to achieve their desired result, combining a male facelift with a neck lift, eyelid lift, brow lift, or facial fat transfer may be necessary.

During your consultation, Dr. Cruise will give his professional recommendation on how best to combine procedures to achieve optimal results.

Surgical Procedure

On the day of your procedure, you will be made comfortable under anesthesia, which may be local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on Dr. Cruise's recommendation and your preferences. Incisions are strategically placed in natural skin creases and along the hairline to minimize visibility. Dr. Cruise will then lift and tighten the underlying facial muscles and tissues, reposition fat deposits, and carefully redrape the skin. Excess skin is removed, and the incisions are meticulously closed.

Following the surgery, you will be monitored in our recovery suite before being discharged to continue your recovery at home with detailed aftercare instructions.

What Causes Facial Aging?

The Aging Face Explained

In the past, it was thought that sagging skin could simply be pulled tight to rewind the clock. However, we now understand that aging is caused in the deep tissues of the face. When you are young, your skin has an abundance of collagen and elastin in the form of a supportive matrix that the skin lies on.

As early as your 30s, collagen begins to break down, and your body becomes less efficient at replacing it. This lack of support (along with the effects of gravity) causes the skin to sag and fold on itself, creating wrinkles and folds. If only the skin is pulled tight with a male facelift, the underlying tissues will not be addressed, and the result can look superficial and will likely not be long-lasting. Therefore, the best male facelifts target both the skin and the underlying tissues for ideal results that can last for many years to come.

When facial fat descends out of the cheek and into the area around the lips, it not only affects the fullness of a person’s face, but can make their eyes look hollow and gaunt and create jowls at their jaw line. When this occurs, some patients are interested in how a neck lift can extend the youthful look and feel to all parts of their neck, addressing all the concerns caused by aging.

Surgical Options

Dr. Cruise will discuss your goals at length during your consultation. He will also consider the “Look You Have” and your “Look You Want” to develop the best surgical approach. There are several male facelift techniques that can be used to create your ideal results.

Superior Face and Neck Lift Technique

This male facelift technique is one of the most effective ways to restore a more youthful look. It works by restoring the facial fat pads to their natural position, reducing the appearance of hollows and folds. In some instances, Dr. Cruise may suggest adding fat into areas of the face where volume has been lost.

This technique has a few major benefits:

  • It reduces nasolabial folds, or folds that run from the nose to the mouth
  • It fills in the area under the eyes, reducing fine lines and bags
  • It enhances the definition of the jawline, creating a more masculine look

Dr. Joseph T. Cruise understands that men have specific cosmetic concerns regarding the facelift. It’s perfectly normal to want to avoid an “operated on” look. Dr. Cruise strives to achieve the most natural result possible – you’ll look like a more rejuvenated version of yourself. Dr. Cruise also specializes in a quicker recovery process than many other male facelift surgeons and offers a unique, 24-hour support system for his recovering male patients.

What to Expect After Surgery

Surgical & Recovery Timeline

Dr. Cruise and his team provide explicit pre and post-operative instructions to his patients so they understand what to expect during the entire surgical process.

There are some things that are normal to experience after a male facelift and some things that are concerning – by providing detailed information, Dr. Cruise can help patients have some peace of mind and understand when they should talk with their team about any concerns. Following your male facelift, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated areas. Aftercare may include taking pain medication, applying cold compresses, keeping your head elevated, and avoiding strenuous activities. Incision care is crucial to prevent infection and ensure proper healing. You will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Cruise to monitor your progress.

While the initial recovery period typically lasts 2-3 weeks, some residual swelling may persist for several months. It's essential to be patient and follow Dr. Cruise's guidance to achieve the best possible results.

The goal is natural-looking rejuvenation that makes you look refreshed and more youthful without appearing as though you've had "work done." Frequently Asked Questions

The three most common types of facelift techniques are a subcutaneous facelift, subcutaneous with fat suspension, and SAMS.

While many people are familiar with the terms mini-facelift, lower facelift, and facelift, what truly defines the type of facelift being performed is the specific technique being used.

Read more here.

You may be wondering, will soft tissue fillers or a fat transfer achieve the results I want, or is a face lift necessary? Dermal fillers can be used to improve facial aging by filling in lines/folds and restoring volume. This is referred to as a "liquid facelift."

A liquid facelift can provide satisfactory results but may be cost-prohibitive if a significant amount of filler is needed. The treatment must also be repeated approximately every 6-18 months depending on the filler used.

A liquid facelift can restore lost volume and provide a very subtle lifting effect, along with minimizing folds and lines. It will not address jowling or neck banding. If too much filler is used to try and correct all of the issues, it can backfire by creating a puffy appearance.

Determining when the best time is to have a facelift is dependent on how much the signs of facial aging are bothering you. If you find that you avoid looking in the mirror or no longer want to have pictures taken, these are signs it may be time to consider a facelift to restore a more youthful appearance.

We believe earlier prevention is best because less surgery is needed and results are not as obvious to others. We have a fair number of patients who elect to have facelift surgery in their 40s when they begin to notice neck banding, nasolabial folds, and jowling. In addition, when less surgery is needed, local anesthesia may be an alternative to general anesthesia.

Although rare, the risks and complications of facelift surgery include:

  • Bleeding, hematoma, bruising
  • Infection
  • Neurological dysfunction (loss of muscle function or sensation), which is usually temporary
  • Widened or thickened scar
  • Loss of hair (around the incision site)
  • Asymmetry (unevenness between two sides)
  • Skin necrosis (loss of skin from tissue death)

In most cases, the answer is no. Joseph T Cruise, MD, uses techniques that greatly reduce the chance of visible long-term scarring. While there are rare instances when a patient does not heal well after surgery resulting in less than ideal scarring, the vast majority of patients, both male, and female, have nearly undetectable incisions after several months to one year post-op.

This will depend on two major factors:

1) Do you want to completely hide the fact you had facelift surgery?

2) Does your job require strenuous activity?

If you don't want anyone at work to know you had "work" done, we recommend taking up to four weeks off.

If your job requires strenuous activity, you may need to take 4-6 weeks off unless your job will let you come back with modified work duties until you are fully cleared for physical activity.

Both local anesthesia and general anesthesia are available. If you are combining multiple procedures into one surgery, general anesthesia will be required. There are other factors which will determine which anesthesia is best suited for you. This will be discussed at your consultation.

Most patients are completely cleared for all physical activity around one month post-surgery. This will vary from patient to patient depending on how the healing process is going.
