The causes of each of the different types of gynecomastia are:
- Excess breast tissue
- Excess fat
- Excess skin
- A combination of the above
It is critical to determine which type of gynecomastia is present to determine the procedure necessary to correct the problem. Typically, this is determined during a clinical examine by an experienced plastic surgeon. Sometimes, however, exact causes can only be determined at the time of surgery.
