The Chin Implant Procedure

When performed alone, chin implant surgeries are generally performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Cruise begins by administering the local anesthetic and sedative so you are relaxed and don’t feel anything during your procedure. He then begins with an incision along the natural crease under the chin. Dr. Cruise will then insert the chin implant, place it accordingly, and suture it in place. The incision is then then closed up and bandaged. A facial compression garment will be recommended to wear for a period of time to aid with healing.

Chin Implant Longevity

Implants are designed to be safe and durable. Chin implants are long-lasting but may need replacement in the future. Chin implants are intended to be permanent, however, they can be removed or replaced if you no longer desire or experience trauma to the augmentation. 

While chin implants will ensure definition and added volume around the chin permanently, they cannot stop the aging process—over time, sagging skin and jowls may mask the augmentation’s appearance. Utilizing skin tightening treatments later on can preserve the appearance of your chin implants. 

Recovery and Long-Term Maintenance

Chin implants are a low-risk surgery commonly resulting in very little downtime. 

Common initial symptoms include: 

• Swelling 
• Bruising
• Tenderness
• Limited mouth mobility

You can anticipate returning to most of your daily activities relatively quickly. If you work from home, you may feel up to working the following day, but avoid talking on the phone too much since you will have limited mouth motion. After surgery will need to keep your head elevated and upright and avoid strenuous activity. Dr. Cruise will give you compression bandages and likely recommend a liquid or soft food diet for the first few days to limit jaw motion. Final results may take up to three months to become apparent.

Since chin implants are permanent, there is no long-term maintenance required. That being said, you should still exercise caution in contact sports and other physical activities since trauma to the chin could require reconstructive surgery. Additionally, properly adhering to your initial aftercare instructions will ensure your long-term results heal correctly.
