The Tummy Tuck Recovery Journey: What to Expect at Home

Seeing your tummy tuck results can be exciting, but before you can show off your new figure, you’ll have to be prepared for your recovery period. Ensuring a smooth recovery takes preparation and guidance from your board-certified plastic surgeon.

Here is what to expect after your tummy tuck procedure with Dr. Joseph T. Cruise and how you’ll proceed after your cosmetic surgery.

Immediately After Surgery

Upon completion of your tummy tuck surgery, you will be covered with dressings and fitted with a special compression garment. Small tubes called drains will be placed during surgery – these help drain off fluid and prevent complications. Drains typically remain in place for up to a week, and you will be given instructions on how to manage them. At this point, you should not have much pain or discomfort because the anesthesia will still be in effect. After a brief monitoring period, you’ll be able to return home.

Returning Home

Once you return home, it’s important to focus on resting. You’ll be given prescription medications to manage any pain and swelling. Be sure to take these according to the instructions so you can rest. It’s normal to feel tired and groggy, as well as having an upset stomach. It’s important to have someone with you who can help you move and carry out tasks around the house since you will be limited in what you can do.

The First 1-2 Weeks

For the first 1-2 weeks of recovery, it’s important to continue focusing on resting. You will have a follow-up visit with Dr. Cruise the day after surgery and then again when it is time to have your drains removed. During these visits, your progress will be closely monitored. It is advisable to wear the compression garment as much as possible during this time to enhance your results and reduce swelling. You will be restricted from lifting heavy objects or performing more strenuous activities, so if you have childcare or pet care needs, it’s best to arrange for help in advance.

Resuming Your Regular Schedule

After 2-3 weeks, you should be able to return to most of your regular activities. If you have a desk-based job, you may be able to return at this point. If you have a more strenuous job, you will likely need to take an additional couple of weeks off.  It is important to avoid exercising during this time.  Dr. Cruise and his team will advise you accordingly. Generally, by this time, you should begin to see significant improvement in the overall appearance of your stomach.

Beyond Your Recovery

In the long term, the best way to maintain the results of your tummy tuck is by living a healthy and active lifestyle. Keep in mind that it may take a few months for swelling to subside completely and up to a year for scars to fade into their final appearance. If you’re concerned about scarring, Dr. Cruise can help you explore products and treatments to help ensure a good result.
