The 4 Face Lift Anesthesia Options

As a result of the increased demand for face lift surgery in Orange County, Cruise Plastic Surgery has begun offering several anesthesia choices to better suit the needs of the individual patient. There are now 4 face lift anesthesia options available to choose from.

  • Local Anesthesia – Anesthetic administered by injections directly to the surgical area. In most cases an oral sedative is also provided in order to relax the patient throughout the surgery. Face lifts performed under local anesthesia do not require an anesthesiologist and usually take place in office.
  • IV Sedation – This type of face lift anesthesia is performed by administering the anesthetic medications through an IV placed in the arm. Patients breathe entirely on their own without assistance from an endotracheal tube. IV sedation is frequently given in combination with a local anesthetic to the area of surgery. This anesthesia can be administered by an RN or anesthesiologist in an outpatient surgery center.
  • General Anesthesia – Administered by a board certified anesthesiologist through an IV placed in the arm and performed with the use of an endotracheal tube for breathing assistance. The face lift patient is completely asleep and unaware of their surroundings. This type of anesthesia is offered at hospitals and outpatient surgery centers.
  • Hybrid Anesthesia – Dr. Joseph T. Cruise and his team of board certified anesthesiologists have developed what can be considered the ideal blend of all of the above. Utilizing Propofol the doses can be adjusted during the surgery varying from a deep sleep to a “twilight” sleep. The benefits include: less anesthesia needed, nausea free and easier recovery.

“Using propofol and other advanced anesthesia techniques has completely changed the patient experience following face lift surgery. Even those who have experienced nausea in prior surgeries using traditional anesthesia are now able to wake up feeling good and nausea free. Truly a game changer!” said Joseph T Cruise, MD.

Patient Evaluation

All patients seeking face lift surgery at Cruise Plastic Surgery must have a full evaluation to determine which anesthesia option is most suitable. In some cases, there may be more than one type of appropriate anesthesia. In those instances the patient can choose their preference. The most important principle is for the patient to have their surgery in a setting where they will have the best surgery experience possible. This means one in which comfort and safety take precedence.
