Answering Your Top Ear Surgery Questions

Prominent, underdeveloped, or misshapen ears are a common source of self-consciousness for patients of all ages. This makes otoplasty, or cosmetic ear surgery, a popular choice. Dr. Cruise’s patients often have similar questions which are shown below.

Why Is Otoplasty Done?

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is performed to change the shape, size, or position of the ear. It is commonly chosen by patients who have particularly prominent ears that stick out more than they like. It can also be performed to correct misshapen ears caused by either birth defects or injuries. Techniques for otoplasty vary, making it a versatile procedure for a variety of concerns regarding the ears.

What Age Should You Have an Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed on children as young as five. This is because the ears reach their full mature size at an early age. However, prior to reaching their final size, it is possible to correct some issues with the ears using splints or other non-surgical options. If you notice a concerning shape or size regarding your young child’s ears, you may consult with a pediatrician to review your options. Many parents choose otoplasty for their young children so they can avoid teasing or self-consciousness when they enter school.

With this in mind, otoplasty can also be performed on teenagers or adults. If you have been bothered by the appearance of your ears for years or suffered damage to your ear or ears as a result of an injury, you are a candidate for otoplasty.

What is Recovery Like After Otoplasty?

Recovery after otoplasty is relatively simple compared to other plastic surgery procedures. The ears are covered by a bandage for protection and support. It is important to avoid putting pressure on the ears as they heal, so patients are advised not to sleep on their sides and to choose shirts which button or zipper in the front or have loose-fitting collars. In the first few days after the surgery, some discomfort or itching are normal. Dr. Cruise may prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable.

Within a few days after otoplasty, Dr. Cruise will remove bandages and check your healing progress. The ears will likely be swollen and red at this stage, and you will be advised to wear a headband over the ears at night to prevent folding or pulling the ears as you sleep. Dr. Cruise will also give you directions regarding medications, applying ointment, and exercise. Patients are usually cleared for most exercise such as cycling or lifting light weights by four weeks and all exercise by six weeks after otoplasty.

Is Otoplasty Permanent?

Changes made during otoplasty are permanent. The only exception is drooping or sagging of the earlobes, which can occur due to age. The angle or projection of the ear will remain in place permanently.

How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?

The average cost of an otoplasty is about $5,900. This will vary for each patient depending on factors like the extent of your surgery and the type of anesthesia used. This will all be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Cruise. As needed, financing options are available to help make the surgery more affordable.
