How Long Do Breast Implants Last?
If you are seriously considering a breast augmentation, you may be wondering how long you can expect to enjoy the results of your procedure. It is important to understand Breast implants are not lifetime devices. The longer you have the implants, the more likely it is that you will experience a complication requiring a revision surgery to replace your breast implants. You may have seen the number ten thrown around across the internet regarding how many years breast implants are expected to “last”. This estimation is incorrect and doesn’t explain what the source of the problem often is and why a patient may wish to have their implants exchanged. Keep reading to learn more about breast implants and their longevity.
Understanding Breast Implants
In recent years there have been great improvements made with the materials used to create safe and natural looking implants. In the early 1960’s the first silicone breast implants surfaced. Over the years the plastic surgery industry has worked to improve both the shells and the materials used to fill the implants. To increase the safety for patients, the silicone gel inside the implants has been changed to become more cohesive to avoid the spreading of material in the event of a rupture. With these improvements, the lifespan of the new implants is expected to be considerably longer, on average lasting approximately 11-15 years, however there are known cases of breast implants lasting much longer.
With silicone implants, the FDA recommends having an MRI screening 3 years after receiving your implants, and every two years after that. Doing so is an effective way of detecting a silent rupture should one occur. Saline implants do not come with this same recommendation, because a rupture is easily detectable. When the saline solution leaks, the implant will deflate, resulting in a change of shape and size.
The Most Common Reason for Revision
Contrary to popular belief, a revision to breast implants is often done due to patient preference and the natural aging process that happens within the breast tissue. Based on patient preference, some women may decide that they would like larger or smaller implants than the original implants. Another reason is that gravity simply takes its toll on the skin and breast tissue as we get older. This, therefore, can cause the implant to sag or hang at a lower position. This change in position may spur a patient to desire a revision to lift the breasts.. Of course, while less common, surgical complications may require the implants be removed.
