My Ears Stick Out. What Can I Do About It?

For a majority of people, the ears are not noticeable, as they lie close to the head and are less visible. Although for some, the ears protrude, distracting from their facial features. This may be a source of self-consciousness after childhood bullying or simple dissatisfaction with one’s appearance. Fortunately,  plastic surgeons such as Dr. Cruise offer a permanent solution for correcting ears that stick out.

Why Do Ears Stick Out?

For a majority of patients with prominent ears, this appearance is present at birth. There are three primary reasons why the ears may stick out. These are:

  1. The antihelical fold is underdeveloped. Most people have two major folds or ridges that make up the outermost part of the ear: the helix and antihelix. In those with underdeveloped antihelical folds, the inner fold will be less developed. This can cause the ears to stick out.
  2. Overdeveloped cartilage in the concha. The concha is the bowl-shaped part of the outer ear. In some people, excess cartilage in this area causes the ears to push away from the head and appear more prominent.
  3. A combination of excess concha cartilage and insufficient antihelical fold.

How Otoplasty Treats Prominent Ears

Otoplasty, commonly called “ear pinning,” is a simple surgery that can treat prominent ears and create a more flattering shape. Otoplasty adjusts the angle of the ears permanently, so that they are less noticeable and more flattering with the patient’s other facial features. Dr. Cruise will perform Otoplasty on children as young as six years old as the cartilage of the ears develops early, however, this will be dependent on how mature the child is along with other factors.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty can be performed in-office under local anesthesia and is completed in just 1-1.5 hours.

During otoplasty, Dr. Cruise makes a small incision behind the ear so that any resulting scars are completely hidden. Through these incisions, excess cartilage within the concha can be removed, or the tissues can be manipulated so the ear is in a more flattering position.

After the surgery is complete, dressings are applied to the ears and should remain in place for about a week. Swelling is normal after an otoplasty but should dissipate within about a week to two weeks. Dr. Cruise may advise a headband be worn while sleeping to support the ears and ensure they heal as intended. Side sleeping should be avoided during the healing process.
