Does a Breast Lift Reduce Cup Size?

Breast lifts are a popular procedure used to restore a youthful appearance, create a more flattering body contour, and provide more latitude with clothing. The procedure involves reshaping and repositioning breast tissue, which means that patients often have questions about the size of their breasts after having a breast lift. In particular, many patients are concerned that their breasts may appear smaller as a result of having a breast lift—this is not typically the case. Dr. Cruise can answer any questions during a consultation, but below is some general information regarding typical breast lift results.

The Breast Lift Procedure

Generally speaking, a breast lift is intended to reduce excess skin and reshape the tissues for a lifted, youthful contour. This can be achieved through a variety of incision placements and techniques. Dr. Cruise typically uses the “donut,” “lollipop,” or “anchor” incision techniques. In a donut breast lift, incisions are made around the entire areola. In a lollipop incision, an additional vertical incision is made from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease. In an anchor incision, Dr. Cruise will also make a horizontal incision along the breast crease.

The best technique for your breast lift will vary depending on your goal results and the degree of sag. Dr. Cruise has developed a classification system to define different stages of breast ptosis, or sagging. These various types can be an indicator for the techniques that will best achieve your intended results.

Does Cup Size Change After a Breast Lift?

In most cases, a breast lift will reduce bra size by one cup. However, this does not mean that the breasts will appear noticeably smaller than they were prior to surgery. Most breast lift patients will find that they previously needed a larger size bra to support sagging skin and tissue. As excess skin is reduced and the tissue is reshaped, a smaller cup may be needed post-surgery. In addition, many patients find that it is easier to find a bra that fits well and is comfortable after their breast lift.

Pairing Breast Lift and Breast Augmentation

Some patients have concerns about reducing their overall size or losing volume through a breast lift. If this is the case, a combination of a breast lift and breast augmentation may be advisable. This involves reshaping the natural breast tissues and reducing sagging and excess skin while also placing breast implants. This is often recommended to patients who are addressing changes in the breasts after breastfeeding, which can result in a “deflated” look. Using breast implants in addition to breast lift techniques can restore a fuller, lifted, and youthful appearance. Additionally, breast implants provide a longer-lasting result.
