50th Anniversary for Silicone Implants

Photo of woman with 50 year old silicone implantsThis year marks the 50th anniversary of silicone breast implants! To commemorate it the NY Daily News interviewed 80 year old Great- grandma Timmie Jean Lindsey who was the first recipient of Silicone Breast Implants in the US.

First Breast Implant Procedure

The first breast implant procedure was performed by Dr. Thomas Cronin and Dr. Frank Gerow in Houston Texas in 1962. Initially, she wasn’t seeking breast augmentation she had visited the surgeon to have some rose tattoos removed from her chest. She was told she was a great candidate for this innovative procedure. The implants never leaked or ruptured. The surrounding breast tissue held them in place until they started to sag when she turned 70.
Dr. Gerow documented her case in medical journals which had a strong impact in the industry. Timmie Jean has no regrets about the procedure and expressed her amazement in the advancements of implants and their role in breast augmentation and reconstruction. She says in the article “It just looks so natural. They can build them up just like the real thing. I’m so proud that it’s available to so many women. It’s not vanity in getting reconstruction. I think it is necessary. It puts them back whole again. I’m so happy that Dr. Gerows silicone implants are what started it all.”

Breast Implant Procedures Now

In the last 50 years breast augmentation procedures have continued their evolution to become safer and deliver more natural results. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) the procedure has continued to grow in popularity with 316,000 procedures performed in 2011. The development of the Silicone implant has changed the lives of millions of women.
