Gynecomastia Newport Beach

Gynecomastia Newport Beach

Gynecomastia is a common problem in men that is non-threatening but can cause a lot of frustration. With Gynecomastia, the breasts swell and they take on a feminine appearance.  Women and men, all have breast glands but they are not that noticeable with men since they typically remain undeveloped. Breast gland development may also affect boys when they are in puberty and continue into adulthood.

How Does Gynecomastia Develop?

Gynecomastia is not a result of fat on the person because he is overweight. It is the result of too much breast tissue. Losing weight or exercising does not reduce breast tissue that leads to gynecomastia. The condition is different from “pseudo-gynecomastia” which is when fat builds up in the breasts because of being overweight. Joseph T Cruise, MD is a Newport Beach board-certified plastic surgeon that is committed to helping men work past this frustrating condition.

Is Gynecomastia Harmful?

Even if Gynecomastia does not put the person at a health risk, research has shown that it can negatively affect quality of life.  Lack of self-confidence and  embarrassment may lead to a deficit in social, mental health and physical functioning of the sufferer. When the condition does not resolve itself, there are treatment options for permanently getting rid of it.

Symptoms & Causes of Gynecomastia

Symptoms include tenderness and swelling of the breast gland tissue on one or both the breasts. The areola which is the area that is pigmented around the nipple may increase in diameter while the chest tissue may look asymmetrical. It is recommended to see a doctor when there is a nipple discharge, pain, tenderness, and swelling or if two or more of these symptoms are combined.

There are many causes of gynecomastia. It may be a result of an imbalance between the sex hormones: estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is a female hormone that makes breasts grow while testosterone is a male hormone that prevents estrogen from growing the breast tissue.

Females and males both have a certain level of estrogen and testosterone. However, testosterone is in high proportion with males and females have a high level of estrogen. Swollen breasts may be even common with males who are approaching older and middle age because of production of less testosterone.
