The most common question asked by patients considering a facelift is “how long does it last?” Good news was released in a recent issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery® stating that the majority of patients will continue to look younger years after surgery.

The study was conducted by Drs. Barry M. Jones of King Edward VII Hospital, London, and Steven J. Lo of Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, Glasgow. They write, “The longevity of facelift surgery is a key question that has not been adequately addressed by previous studies.” The research studied 50 patients that had undergone facelift surgery an average of five and a half years previously.

“This study provides strong evidence that facelift surgery can provide significant long-term aesthetic gains,” Drs. Jones and Lo write. “Furthermore,” they add, “this study also supports facelift surgery as the only rejuvenation technique to have objective and subjective evidence for long term efficacy, emphasizing the current lack of evidence of other interventions.” Read article

Banks, who started modeling at 15, used to be teased for her looks. “I was very much teased as a kid for my forehead and even on the internet.”
It was her modeling career that made her feel good about her appearance. “My agency told me that if I had a smaller forehead, I would be too commercial.” Now she calls herself “flawsome with a big forehead and cellulite.”
Tyra is 38 and still gorgeous but would she have plastic surgery at some point? “Sure!” She said but is indecisive when she will actually do it. “I’m very lucky,” she admitted. “But if one day I have wrinkles and I don’t like it, I don’t know if I will cut myself but maybe… a little Botox, fillers?”

It’s one of life’s small injustices – women are more prone than men to form wrinkles around the mouth. There are a few reasons why:

1. According to a recent analysis by dermatologists in the Netherlands, women have fewer oil-producing sebaceous glands around the upper lip – meaning less oil to keep the skin soft and supple.

3. The muscles around the mouth are closer to the skin in women than they are in men; this can mean the skin is pulled closer, leading to wrinkles.

Short of cosmetic surgery, there’s not much you can do to eliminate wrinkles, but you may be able to minimize them by not smoking, avoiding sun damage and keeping your skin well moisturized.

“Typically soft tissue fillers, fat transfer or dermabrasion will treat the wrinkles around the mouth,” says Dr. Joseph Cruise, board certified plastic surgeon from Newport Beach. “Occasional Botox to the area above upper lip may help prevent formation of those wrinkles. “

Chin augmentation is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedure according to new statistics released by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The rise in popularity is partly attributed to the utilization of cameras, with programs like Skype and Facetime, socially and in the workplace.

The ASPS states that chin augmentation procedures in 2011 grew more that breast augmentation, Botox, and liposuctions combined. There was a 71% increase in procedures from 2010. The procedure skyrocketed in both women and men, as well as in all patients over the age of 20. The largest increases were with men and patients over 40.

The chin and jaw line are among the first areas to show signs of aging. People are considering chin augmentation as a way to restore their youthful look just like a facelift or eyelid surgery,” said ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD. “We also know that as more people see themselves on video chat technology, they may notice that their jaw line is not as sharp as they want it to be. Chin implants can make a dramatic difference.”

A competitive work market and a desire to rejuvenate the appearance were factors that contributed to the increase of a variety of cosmetic facial procedures besides the chin implant. Lip augmentation, soft tissue fillers and facelifts also grew in popularity.
